Medical and Dental Students

Medical Insurance

Medical and dental students enrolled in the University of Connecticut Health Center are offered a choice of two Anthem BlueCare plans: Point of Enrollment or Point of Service. Both plans provide prescription drug coverage. Coverage will be effective September 1, 2008 through August 31, 2009 for the upcoming 2008/09 academic year.  Students are not permitted to decline ("opt out" of) the Health Center medical insurance plan.

The enrollment fee for the Point of Enrollment plan is included in the annual University fees paid by students. Students choosing the more costly Point of Service plan must pay an additional fee for this coverage. Information regarding both plans can be obtained by accessing the Anthem web site and then going to UConn Health Plans for Students and Graduate Assistants.

Dental Insurance

Dental coverage is available through CIGNA Health Care. Dental coverage is optional, and students are responsible for all fees associated with this coverage.  Again, coverage will be effective September 1, 2008 through August 31, 2009 for the upcoming 2008/09 academic year.

Dependent Coverage

Dependents can be enrolled in the medical (POE or POS) plan and/or dental plan if certain eligibility requirements are met. Please note that students will be charged a separate fee for dependent coverage.

Graduate Students

Graduate Coverage

All graduate students are required to have health coverage. Students will be required to sign a waiver indicating that they have a current health coverage if they are not enrolled in one of the two plans listed below.

Graduate Assistants/NIH Trainees
Graduate students who are Graduate Assistants at 0.5 FTE or greater and those who have appointments as trainees on NIH training grants or individual NRSA fellowships (or the equivalent) are eligible for health coverage through the Health Center's Benefits office. Graduate Assistants may add spouses, children and same sex domestic partners to their coverage for an additional charge. This coverage is described in Insurance Information for Graduate Assistants/Trainees.

Non-Graduate Assistants
Fulltime UConn Health Center graduate students who are not Graduate Assistants are eligible to enroll in either a POE or POS Anthem BlueCare plan offered to UConn Health Center medical and dental students. Please contact Mr. Charles Rowland at crowland@uchc.edu for further information.

IMPORTANT NOTE
The University uses what is called a "hard waiver" system to assure student health coverage. This means students will be AUTOMATICALLY enrolled in and billed for the University-sponsored plan. If you want coverage under the University-sponsored plan, do nothing; you are automatically enrolled.

If you wish to decline the university plan, you must waive it via the Health Insurance Waiver in the PeopleSoft Financials system. Log into your PeopleSoft account, then navigate to:

> SA Self Service > Learner Services > Finances > UC Health Insurance Waiver.

The on-line waiver is only available through the tenth day of classes and must be completed by September 15, 2008 for the 2008/09 Academic Year.

If you fail to complete the waiver in PeopleSoft, it will be assumed that you accept coverage offered under the University sponsored health insurance plan, and the charge for that coverage will remain on your fee bill.
